Theseus' Ship (2023)

instrumentation: solo violin

5'

Theseus is a king in Greek mythology whose ship was left to decay in the Athenian Harbor. Throughout the centuries, the rotting planks of his ship were slowly replaced until the ship was entirely constructed of fresh wood. This left philosophers asking if the rebuilt ship still deserved its title or if the integrity remained in the abandoned wood. Like the composition process of this piece, new and more fitting musical ideas were replacing original ideas. While these abandoned sketches do not act as the actual argument of the piece, they still hold some value as they influence the flavor of the finished product. That being said, the old ideas sit somewhere in a closet as the newer ones define the completed work.
