Louis A. Josephson (b. 2001) is a published and award-winning ASCAP composer from Central New Jersey who strives to speak to all audiences through thematically-driven musical works accomplished with a palette of rhythms and textures. Based in New York City, Louis is currently attending The Juilliard School as an undergraduate composition major studying with Robert Beaser.

Louis' music has been performed and recorded by various ensembles in the United States and Europe including The United States Air Force Band, The Juilliard Pre-College Orchestra, The Juilliard Pre-College Symphony, The Sirius Quartet, The Atlanta Freedom Bands, The Westminster Community Orchestra, and The West Windsor-Plainsboro High School South Philharmonia and Concert Choir. His music has been premiered at music and theater festivals and conventions including The Tribeca New Music Festival, The 4th Annual Jersey Fringe Festival, The Association of Concert Bands, the National Association of Music Educators, and MakeMusic.

Louis works professionally for The Juilliard Jazz Orchestra as a transcriber, editor, engraver, and audio engineer and formerly with Art of Sound Music as an engraver and editor. Over the past year, Louis coordinated, produced, and engineered many virtual performances of his original works. These works ranged from Virtual Big Bands to Musical Theater Ensembles. In addition, he teaches composition/theory privately and in group settings and has performed in various choirs, orchestras, bands, jazz ensembles, and musical pit orchestras as a pianist/keyboardist, percussionist, singer, and actor. 

Louis has received first-prize awards from The Juilliard School Pre-College Composition Competition, The Tribeca New Music Young Composer Competition, NAfME Student Composition Competition, The Association of Concert Bands Young Composer Competition, MakeMusic Young Composers Contest, and MYO Emerging Composers Competition. He has received honors for the ASCAP Morton Gould Young Composer Contest, The American Prize, the Maurice Ravel International Composition Competition, and The Young Composer’s Challenge.


Prior to Louis' undergraduate studies, he studied composition at the Juilliard Pre-College Division, and he studied music composition and conducting at the Carnegie Mellon University Pre-College Summer Program and the Honors Music Program of Westminster Conservatory. He studied composition with Eric Ewazen, Mark Fromm, Craig Levesque, and Michael Green; piano with Tristan Teo, Ernest Baretta, and Bigad Khloussi; percussion with Jonathan Haas, Pablo Rieppi, and Eriko Daimo; and conducting with Maestro Daniel Nesta Curtis and Richard Tang-Yuk.
